4th African Urban Research Initiative Meeting

The fourth African Urban Research Initiative Meeting was held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on the 28-30 June 2015. Africa Urban Research initiative (AURI) is a network composed of 12 urban research centres across the African continent established in 2013. AURI supports existing and future Africa based research centres to improve the capacity of individual centres to undertake collaborative urban research and to engage with key decision---makers to proactively address Africa’s urban transition. The meeting was supported by  the Ford Foundation, as part of a one-year work programme aimed at consolidating the network and refining collective thinking on key issues that will ultimately inform the forthcoming AURI publications for dissemination at the 2015 Africities conference and Habitat III in 2016. In attendance from the University of Nairobi was Prof Peter M. Ngau (CURI) and Prof Winnie Mitullah (IDS).

Attendees took stock of the contribution of the country-level workshops held earlier this year by each AURI partner. CURI had collaborated with the Institute for development studies to host Kenya’s in-country workshop Kenya National Stakeholders Workshop held in Nairobi on the 11th of March 2015

The meeting in Dares Salaam consolidated ideas from the various in-country workshop through presentations made by the hosts from various countries. The meeting also included presentation of three think pieces commissioned on behalf of AURI to contribute to the formulation of policy briefs to be published and launched at the 2015 Africities conference. The topics include:

- Towards the development of an alternative paradigm for African cities

- How to be a strategic intermediary?

- Different institutional models for the co-production of urban knowledge

The two day meeting concluded with the planning for AURI 2016 for its funding options, the hosting of the network and the next meeting to be held.
