African Urban Planning and the Global South: Pedagogies, Research and Practice

The 2014 AAPS Conference ended yesterday November 19th, 2014 in Cape Town, South Africa. AAPS is a network of 51 university-based planning programmes in Anglophone, Lusiphone and Francophone Africa. For the first time the AAPS conference held every two years opened its doors to partners and key stakeholders in the built environment. In recent years AAPS has grown rapidly to became the new champions and torch for Africa’s future.

The Association of African Planning Schools has a membership of 51 University based planning programmes across Africa.  AAPS centres on planning education and aims at fostering planning professionals who will focus on social and spatial justice and the sustainability of the environment. The association aims at enabling professionals to cope with and manage the issues currently facing cities and towns in Africa.

Association of African Planning Schools (AAPS) Kenya Chapter Consultations Workshop Proceedings

Workshop proceedings for a workshop held on 23-24th Septemebr 2013 at Silver Springs Hotel in Nairobi. The workshop was a consultation to explore ways in which mutual collaboration between AAPS an UN-Habitat may be increased. It also aimed at creating a forum for the schools to explore how to improve the associations objectives in Kenya.

Energy Audit in Informal Settlements

The Centre for Urban Research and Innovations (CURI) has collaborated with the UN-Habitat´s Urban Energy Unit to conduct an energy audit in informal settlements in Kenya. This research will address existing gaps in terms of consistent, relevant and adequate data on various types of buildings in informal settlements. It will allow formulating benchmarks, as well as identifying opportunities and energy saving potentials.

UIP/CURI Seminar Series: Ronald McGill

On Wednesday 24th September 2014, the Centre for Urban Research hosted for Ronald McGill , the head of the advisory team of the Kenya Municipal Program, to give a seminar talk to members within the University.  The presentation was titled: Urban Development Challenge; a new Response. It was broken down into four parts; The urban challenge, Town planning, Poverty and Participation.
