Spatial Change and City Planning: Post Graduate and Post Doctoral Research Funding

The South African Research Chair in Spatial Change and City Planning hosted by Wits University is funded by the National Research Foundation (NRF) as part of the South African Research Chairs Initiative.

The research funding allows for a number of Masters and Doctoral students and a Post Doctoral fellowship:  Post Doctoral – R200 000 plus medical aid; Doctoral - R100 000; Masters – R70 000.  Students are to be supervised by a Wits academic in an appropriate discipline. They must address issues relating to the planning and development of large cities or city-regions in emerging economies (including within BRICS countries).

Topics could relate to: 

  • Governance 
  • Economies 
  • Infrastructure and settlement 
  • Urban structure and form

These could be researched in relation to cross-cutting themes such as urban sustainability and resilience; marginalisation and exclusion; innovation; transnationalism; and local ethnographies. Students must be full-time and there is a residence requirement. Stipends are as follows:
